CARE AND PREPARATION – CARNATIONS
DIY Bulk Flower Guide

To ensure proper hydration, opening, and handling of carnations, please follow these steps carefully upon receiving your flowers:

  1. Unpack immediately. Remove the flowers from the box as soon as they arrive. Carnations are typically packed in bunches of 25 stems.
  2. Remove outer packaging. Take off all outer packaging and protective wraps.
  3. Remove lower leaves. Strip off any foliage that would sit below the water line to keep the water clean and reduce bacteria.
  4. Handle with care. Carnation stems are notorious for snapping at the nodes. When cleaning and handling stems, work gently and avoid bending or applying pressure at the joints.
  5. Prepare clean water. Fill a clean bucket or vase with fresh water. Add floral food and stir until fully dissolved.
  6. Trim the stems correctly. Cut approximately 1–2 inches off the stems using sharp scissors or a knife. Always cut between the nodes, never directly at a node. This is especially important if carnations will be used in floral foam.
  7. Hydrate the flowers. Place stems immediately into water and keep them in a cool area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  8. Allow time to open. Carnations may take several days to open, especially if they arrive very tight. Using slightly warmer water can help encourage opening.
  9. Encourage opening if needed.
If blooms are not open enough when needed, hold the flower at the base and gently roll it between your fingers while lightly squeezing. At the same time, use your other hand to form a circle with your thumb and index finger and gently guide it down over the top of the bloom. This should be done carefully to avoid damaging the petals.
  10. Daily care. Change the water regularly, remove any spent blooms, and re-cut stems as needed, always cutting between nodes.
